BMJ Innovations is a global, peer reviewed, online journal that provides a central point for publication of basic, clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies of all aspects of medical innovations. Editor-in-Chief: Professor Balram Bhargava

Current position: Executive Director and Professor of Cardiology
Research interests: Biomedical innovation, public health, medical education and medical research. Developed the indigenous Platinum Iridium coronary stent and has been instrumental in clinically evaluating low cost Indian stents. Currently developing the Chest Compression Device for Sudden Cardiac Death patients, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Providing leadership for creative disease prevention, early detection and transport system for sick cardiac patients.
Other achievements: Promoted the India-Stanford Biodesign programme, a unique interdisciplinary programme to foster innovation, design in low cost implants/devices. Set up the Centre for Excellence for Stem Cell Studies, which has initiated treatment of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy for the first time in the world. This has benefitted number of no-option patients waiting on the cardiac transplant list. Awarded the SN Bose Centenary award by the Indian National Science Congress and National Academy of Sciences Platinum Jubilee Award, Tata Innovation Fellowship and Vasvik Award for Biomedical Technology Innovation.⇓

Current position: Physician-Engineer, Researcher and Educator
Education: Graduated in Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) from Patna Medical College, India and later pursued Family Medicine for his Post-Graduation from Royal College of General Practitioners, London, UK. Along with a clinical career in Internal Medicine he took up research in Bioengineering at IIT, Kanpur and for his MS worked on a collaborative project between IITK, CDRI Lucknow, Tata Memorial Hospital and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) to develop a bioengineered construct for personalized cancer chemotherapy. Trained in Biodesign at Stanford University.
Research interests: Medical devices, mHealth, frugal innovation, user experience design, emergency medicine, patient education tools, clinical decision making, pulmonology, critical care, women's health.
Other achievements: Authored a series of medical handbooks for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and has mentored students from various IITs, IIMs & Tata Memorial Hospital ACTREC. He is the inventor of medical devices for Feto-Maternal monitoring, Stroke detection, Preventions of Stress Urinary Incontinence among other devices.

Other achievements: Developed the Narayana Health network of hospitals across India. The flagship hospital in Bangalore at NH Health City houses India's largest bone marrow transplant unit, is one of the world's largest heart hospitals, and has one of the world's largest telemedicine networks.⇓

Employment History: Director of the Department of Invasive Cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK for 12 years before moving to the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where he became Professor and Chief of the Cardiology Center in the Department of Internal Medicine until his official retirement in 2006.
Education: Medical degrees from Germany and Switzerland, followed by cardiology specialist training in the USA and Europe.
Other achievements: A pioneer of interventional cardiology, credited with the concept and realization of endoluminal stenting, which has revolutionized coronary and peripheral revascularisation. Conceived and introduced into clinical practice non-surgical myocardial reduction therapy, which has now become an accepted and widely used treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Recipient of the Medal of the European Society of Cardiology, the King Faisal International Prize for Medicine, the Grüntzig Award, the Forssman Prize and an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Lausanne. ⇓

Other achievements: Invented the Rapid Exchange™ balloon angioplasty system, which is now the primary system in use worldwide, and a Doppler-guided access system known as the Smart Needle™. Authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, chapters and editorials, a textbook and over 45 US patents. Recipient of the Transcatheter Therapeutics (TCT) Career Achievement Award, the American College of Cardiology Distinguished Scientist Award and an honorary doctorate from Amherst College. Founder and Director of the Program in Biodesign, a unit of Stanford's Bio-X initiative that focuses on invention and technology transfer related to biomedical engineering.
