BMJ Innovations is a global, peer reviewed, online journal that provides a central point for publication of basic, clinical, translational, and epidemiological studies of all aspects of medical innovations. Editor-in-Chief: Professor Balram Bhargava

Current affiliation: Stanford-India Biodesign Program and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India

Current position: Executive Director and Professor of Cardiology

Research interests: Biomedical innovation, public health, medical education and medical research. Developed the indigenous Platinum Iridium coronary stent and has been instrumental in clinically evaluating low cost Indian stents. Currently developing the Chest Compression Device for Sudden Cardiac Death patients, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Providing leadership for creative disease prevention, early detection and transport system for sick cardiac patients.

Other achievements: Promoted the India-Stanford Biodesign programme, a unique interdisciplinary programme to foster innovation, design in low cost implants/devices. Set up the Centre for Excellence for Stem Cell Studies, which has initiated treatment of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy for the first time in the world. This has benefitted number of no-option patients waiting on the cardiac transplant list. Awarded the SN Bose Centenary award by the Indian National Science Congress and National Academy of Sciences Platinum Jubilee Award, Tata Innovation Fellowship and Vasvik Award for Biomedical Technology Innovation.

Current position: Physician-Engineer, Researcher and Educator

Education: Graduated in Medicine & Surgery (MBBS) from Patna Medical College, India and later pursued Family Medicine for his Post-Graduation from Royal College of General Practitioners, London, UK. Along with a clinical career in Internal Medicine he took up research in Bioengineering at IIT, Kanpur and for his MS worked on a collaborative project between IITK, CDRI Lucknow, Tata Memorial Hospital and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) to develop a bioengineered construct for personalized cancer chemotherapy. Trained in Biodesign at Stanford University.

Research interests: Medical devices, mHealth, frugal innovation, user experience design, emergency medicine, patient education tools, clinical decision making, pulmonology, critical care, women's health.

Other achievements: Authored a series of medical handbooks for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and has mentored students from various IITs, IIMs & Tata Memorial Hospital ACTREC. He is the inventor of medical devices for Feto-Maternal monitoring, Stroke detection, Preventions of Stress Urinary Incontinence among other devices.

Current position: Programme Director of BioInnovate Ireland and Lecturer in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering

Education: PhD in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering from the National University of Galway.

Research interests: Design and development of medical devices, including devices for the treatment of Deep Vein Thrombosis and Acute Pancreatitis.

Current position: Professor of Marketing, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor of Indian Business and Enterprise, and Director of the Centre for India & Global Business

Education: BTech degree from IIT Delhi, India and a PhD from the University of Southern California, USA

Career history: Held positions at Cambridge University and Imperial College London, UK, Tilburg University, the Netherlands, and UCLA, USA

Research interests: Marketing, innovation, strategy and international business. How multinationals are using emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and Africa as a lab to do affordable and sustainable innovation for global application.

Other achievements: Editorial board member of leading international journals including the Journal of Marketing and the International Journal of Research in Marketing. Co-author of Jugaad Innovation: Think Frugal, Be Flexible, Generate Breakthrough Growth, described by The Economist as “the most comprehensive book yet” on the subject of frugal innovation.

Current affiliation: IIT Delhi, New Delhi, India

Current position: Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Education: PhD from IIT Kanpur, India. Also held research positions at the National Institute of Standards & Technology, MIT, and Stanford University, USA.

Research interests: Product realization and design of medical and assistive devices.

Other achievements: Coordinator of IIT Delhi's Innovation Center with responsibility for initiating many new courses and schemes in the space of product design and innovation.

Current position: Additional Professor of Cardiology and Associate Director

Education: Medical and postgraduate degrees from the University of Delhi, India. Completed three years of super specialization in Cardiology

Research interests: Interventional cardiology and innovation of medical devices.

Other achievements: Awarded the prestigious ‘Tata-Innovation Award’ of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in recognition of his outstanding contribution in translational research and creation of innovative platform technologies.

Current position: Coordinator for Diagnostic Imaging and Medical Devices

Education: Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico, and MSc in Clinical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, USA

Research interests: Delivery of health services with appropriate and affordable health technologies in low resource settings.

Current position: Founder-Director and Emeritus Professor

Career history: Founder President of the British Society of Haemostasis and Thrombosis and Founder President of the South Asian Society of Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis.

Other achievements: Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons, the David Patey prize of the Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the Wright-Schultz award from the International Society of Thrombosis and Hameostasis for original and outstanding contribution in Thrombosis Research.

Research interests: Cardiovascular health, tobacco control, chronic disease prevention and healthy living.

Other achievements: Editor of the National Medical Journal of India for 10 years. Editorial board member of several international and national journals. More than 400 scientific publications in international and Indian peer reviewed-journals.

Current position: Cardiac surgeon, Chairman and Founder

Education: Graduate degree in Medicine and post-graduate work in General Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India. Cardiac surgery training at Guy's Hospital, London, UK.

Other achievements: Developed the Narayana Health network of hospitals across India. The flagship hospital in Bangalore at NH Health City houses India's largest bone marrow transplant unit, is one of the world's largest heart hospitals, and has one of the world's largest telemedicine networks.

Editorial Board Member: Professor Ulrich Sigwart

Employment History: Director of the Department of Invasive Cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, UK for 12 years before moving to the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where he became Professor and Chief of the Cardiology Center in the Department of Internal Medicine until his official retirement in 2006.

Education: Medical degrees from Germany and Switzerland, followed by cardiology specialist training in the USA and Europe.

Other achievements: A pioneer of interventional cardiology, credited with the concept and realization of endoluminal stenting, which has revolutionized coronary and peripheral revascularisation. Conceived and introduced into clinical practice non-surgical myocardial reduction therapy, which has now become an accepted and widely used treatment of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Recipient of the Medal of the European Society of Cardiology, the King Faisal International Prize for Medicine, the Grüntzig Award, the Forssman Prize and an Honorary Doctorate of the University of Lausanne.

Current position: Martha Meier Weiland Professor of Medicine and Mechanical Engineering, Founding Co-chair of Department of Bioengineering

Research interests: Device development and testing in interventional, cardiology including angioplasty, atherectomy, and stents; intravascular ultrasound: development and clinical trials; advanced, coronary imaging techniques including x-ray topography; coronary, hemodynamics especially velocity and pressure measurements

Other achievements: Invented the Rapid Exchange™ balloon angioplasty system, which is now the primary system in use worldwide, and a Doppler-guided access system known as the Smart Needle™. Authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, chapters and editorials, a textbook and over 45 US patents. Recipient of the Transcatheter Therapeutics (TCT) Career Achievement Award, the American College of Cardiology Distinguished Scientist Award and an honorary doctorate from Amherst College. Founder and Director of the Program in Biodesign, a unit of Stanford's Bio-X initiative that focuses on invention and technology transfer related to biomedical engineering.
